A round-up of the best bars in Holbox – and along the beach – whatever kind of nightlife you’re looking for…

It’s no secret that Isla Holbox is one of my favourite places in Mexico! I fell in love on my first trip to the country several years ago, and have been back many times since.

And one of the reasons I love this tiny, car-free island so much is the nightlife scene.

Like everything else on Isla Holbox, the nightlife is super chill. Even the most fancy spots have relaxed vibes and there’s rarely a dress code. In fact, I think most places would happily let you in barefoot!

But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a party scene to be found. There are beach clubs and lively bars for live music, DJ sets, and dancing. Chilled-out lounge bars with trendy vibes and cool cocktails. And rustic, tables-on-the-beach bars for watching sunset over the sea with a beer.

In short, whatever type of nightlife you’re after, you’ll find something you like. Below is your guide to some of the best bars and beach clubs in Holbox and nearby…

6 Best Bars in Holbox Town

1. Hot Corner

Lively party bar with daily live music and relaxed, barefoot vibes

a bar with open front and wooden bar stools lined up along the edge of the road with a grass rood and a sign saying the Hot Corner at night with fairy lights overhead and a palm tree above in holbox mexico

The Hot Corner is the centre of Holbox’s nightlife scene. Sitting on a street corner between the beach and the main square, this is one of the most popular bars in Holbox, where the party often spills out into the street.

I’ve had MANY memorable nights (hazily memorable) at this awesome bar! The vibe is relaxed and rustic: think grass-frond roofs, reclaimed wood stools, and zero dress code. Just great (boozy) cocktails, regular live music, and a great atmosphere.

2. Tribu Hostel

Live music, regular events, and a great atmosphere

Tribu Hostel is one of the best hostels on Isla Holbox – a great place to stay on a budget and home to one of my favourite hostel bars in Mexico!

There ALWAYS seems to be something on: live music, pub quizzes, open mics, and so much more. The regular Art Nights are a mixed bag where you might see anything from an exhibition or theatre to fire shows and juggling. Throw in some fantastic cocktails at backpacker-friendly prices and you have one of the best nights in Holbox!

3. LUUMA

Boho-chic bar with sandy floors and trendy, chilled vibes

LUUMA is one of the more trendy bars in Holbox: modern and laid-back with chilled-out vibes and a natural aesthetic.

It’s an open-air restaurant and bar tucked within a walled garden, with sandy floors, rustic wood furnishings, and wicker lanterns. The food is fantastic (mostly tapas and sharing plates) and the cocktails are even better!

4. Barba Negra

Seafood, tacos, and awesome cocktails – and a lively after-dark atmosphere

Barba Negra is really more of a restaurant than a bar – known for serving what many say are the best tacos in Holbox (and I’m inclined to agree). But it has such a lively after-dark atmosphere that it definitely deserves a spot on this list.

It’s a partly-covered, open-air space with strings of lights, casual service, and great music. Don’t miss it!

5. Crónicas Taproom

Taproom with wood-fired pizzas, cocktails, and Mexcian craft beers

exterior of Cronicas taproom lit up at night, a square one storey building with an open front and a roof terrace under a wooden awning

Beer lovers won’t want to miss Crónicas, Holbox’s only Taproom. Right on the main square, it’s a great place to start a night – and discover some fab local craft beers.

The food is great, too. They’re well known for their delicious wood-fired pizzas, but DON’T miss the sides. I loved their lobster mac & cheese! It’s not all about the beers, either. There’s also a great selection of small-batch mezcals to try, and some really yummy cocktails too.

6. La Combi

Live music, sporting events on TV, and a relaxed atmosphere

On the road between the main square and the beach, La Combi is a super casual restaurant and sports bar – named for the model VW Kombi that adorns the stage.

That stage hosts regular live music – as well as karaoke nights and other events – and the bar also shows all the major sporting events like football and boxing. So if you don’t want to miss a game while you’re in Holbox, this is the place to come.

7. Salma

Beachfront restaurant & bar with Tulum vibes

Directly in front of the main pier in Holbox, Salma is a beach-facing bar and restaurant with sandy floors, palm frond roofs, and contemporary-boho vibes. They’re known for great food, creative cocktails, and a strong music scene – mostly techno, house, and electronic.

Salma also hosts regular events, including a monthly Full Moon Party. So it can be a good place to go looking for a night out in Holbox.

6 Beach Bars in Holbox

Day or night, the beautiful Holbox beaches are lined with lively bars and beach clubs to suit all tastes.

There are beach clubs where a minimum spend gets you access to sun loungers, shade umbrellas and toilets. Some wind down just after sunset – others sometimes carry the party on into the night.

Plus, there are plenty of more casual little joints that are great for a quick bite or a drink whilst watching one of those famous Holbox sunsets…

8. Bar Barossa Beach Club

Great cocktails and good tunes – sometimes party, sometimes chilled

BarBarossa is one of my personal favourite beach clubs in Holbox. It’s one of the first clubs on the main beach, just past the pier and the famous “Holbox” letters, so it’s an easy one to get to. It’s got a bit of a backpacker, party atmosphere (with loud music some days) and a live DJ set playing sunset most evenings.

The food can be hit and miss (and quite slow), so I recommend sticking to simple stuff – but the drinks are good and the staff are friendly. There’s a minimum spend of 500MXN per person, which means that if you buy a few drinks you can have a sun lounger for the day (and the shade of a palapa if you’re like me and have to hide from the sun!).

9. Capitán Capitán Beach Club

Loud music and party vibes right on the beach

Right at the start of the main beach in Holbox, next to the pier, Capitán Capitán is one of the island’s most popular beach clubs. This is probably partly thanks to their turquoise swing seat in front of the sea – which makes a great photo op! But it’s also down the fun vibe, good food, and perfect location.

There’s often a party atmosphere all day long, although it can be more chilled sometimes. At weekends there’s often live music and/or DJ sets after sunset. Again, there’s a minimum spend of 500MXN pp to use the loungers – but that’s easily done with one appetizer and a couple of drinks.

10. Ñaña Beach Club

Caribbean food, tropical cocktails, and Insta-worthy aesthetic

If you’re looking for a slightly more upscale and tranquil beach club, stroll a little way along the beach to La Playa de Ñaña. It’s a seriously Instagrammable spot – there’s even a fun mirrored door photo op – with beautiful, Holboxeño decor and lots of local, cream-coloured textiles.

The food is GREAT: lots of amazing seafood dishes, fresh sushi, and delicious ceviche. Hands down the best food I tried at any of the beach clubs in Holbox – and some of the best I’ve had on the island. Plus there’s a solid range of cocktails and other drinks: including a fab set of signature cocktails in fun Tiki glasses.

11. Escape

Chilled beach bar with epic sunset views

Escape is a small, rustic, and super casual bar right on the beach, in a perfect spot for watching Holbox’s spectacular sunsets. Not only are the chairs and tables right on the sand, but at high tide you may even find the waves lapping at your toes!

In my experience, the food wasn’t great (not bad, just OK). But the vibe was good and the drinks prices are decent, especially considering this rustic bar’s prime location!

12. El Chiringuito Bar Zomay

Swing seats, relaxed vibes, and one of the best sunset views

open sided wooden bar building with a row of swing seats at the bar and a grass roof with a white sandy beach in front. the sign says Zomay Hotel Holbox.

The beach resto-bar at Hotel Zomay is another great sunset spot, on the west-facing section of the beach (head left from Holbox Pier).

It’s a shabby-chic spot (emphasis on chic) with swing seats at the bar, sun loungers under grass-roofed palapas on the sand, and hammocks strung up between palm trees. A perfect place to spend a chilled afternoon. Later, you can sip a tropical cocktail or a cold glass of wine while you watch the sun setting over the sea.

13. Ehuan

Trendy boho beach bar with good tunes and killer cocktails

Tucked back from the beach itself, but still very much facing the ocean, Ehuan is an upscale restaurant and bar known for its delicious food and creative mixology. The decor is luxurious island-chic: shrouded in palms with tables on the sand and a bar adorned with Yucatecan crochet lanterns.

Food and drinks are an art form at Ehuan: expect beautiful, delicious dishes and lots of great local seafood. DON’T miss the quirky cocktails (think domes full of dry ice and Margaritas served in goblets encrusted with glittering chilli salt). Perfect for a fancy night out.
