Indonesia has unveiled biometric corridors through a partnership with
Amadeus.
The development uses artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled biometrics to
confirm passengers’ identities as they move through the corridors, removing the
need to present documents.
The initiative is part of the Indonesian government’s “All Indonesia”
digital transformation program aiming to improve the entry process for
international travelers.
Indonesia’s immigration authority has put two biometric corridors in
place at Jakarta airport and a third at Surabaya. The technology will initially
be used for elderly and disabled travelers before being extended to travelers
across the country’s airports.
Enrolment is via the “All Indonesia” app, which covers immigration,
customs, health and quarantine declarations. Passengers can share passport
information from home, enabling the immigration service to perform background
checks before the travelers reach the airport.
The technology was tested during Hajj when 220,00 people traveled
between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. Each biometric corridor facilitated more
than 30 border crossings per minute at peak times, a tenfold increase in
capacity compared to biometric eGates.
Amadeus has collaborated with Sinergi Teknoglobal Perkasa to deploy the
technology.
“The Seamless Corridor is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of our end-to-end
portfolio for seamless travel, helping to remove friction and queues at the
border, said Rudy Daniello, EVP of airport operations at Amadeus.
“In combination with innovations in digital identity and biometrics at
key airport service points, it’s finally possible for airlines, airports and
governments to provide a truly seamless, secure experience, free from document
checks, queues and barriers.”
“By combining global expertise with local innovation, we are not only
delivering world-class border solutions but also empowering Indonesia teams
through technology transfer and capability building,” said Andi Syach, CEO of Sinergi Teknoglobal Perkasa.
“This close cooperation ensures that the solutions deployed today will
continue to evolve and serve the nation’s long-term vision for smart, secure and seamless travel.”
Earlier this year, Frankfurt
Airport announced the deployment of AI-powered security scanners with the technology
provided by Rohde & Schwarz. In 2018, Emirates announced a biometric path
for travelers passing through various checkpoints at Dubai International Airport. The Indonesian initiative is an upgrade on the Dubai project because it removes the need for eGates.
