Disney Cruise Line revealed more details on “Disney The Tale of Moana,” which will premiere exclusively at the Walt Disney Theatre onboard the Disney Treasure in December 2024. With a set design and music bursting with elements of Pacific Island culture that inspire the classic coming-of-age story, this innovative production will immerse audiences in a transformational adventure across land and sea in the first stage adaptation inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios film.
Towering Puppets Take Stage
To create the incredible puppetry that will bring some of the characters to life on stage, Disney Live Entertainment’s creative director of puppetry and articulation, Jeff Conover, collaborated with master puppet designer Michael Curry, whose creations can be seen in Disney’s Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “The Lion King”. Disney Cruise Line’s new puppet, the huge and fiery Te Kā, will be unprecedented in scale. When Moana meets Te Kā and restores Te Fiti’s heart, the giant puppet will lose its fiery shell and transform into the gentle island goddess Te Fiti.
Practice your “Warrior Face”
Moana and Maui will play the song “Warrior Face” for the first time in the stage production when the demigod teaches Moana how to face her anxieties before entering the Realm of the Monsters to confront Tamatoa. The stage play will feature “Warrior Face” as well as classics from the Grammy-winning soundtrack, such as “You’re Welcome,” “We Know The Way,” and “How Far I’ll Go.”
The scenes in “An Innocent Warrior” and “Disney The Tale of Moana” will begin in the modern day on the fictional island of Motunui, with clues of dazzling civilisations from the Pacific Islands throughout the show. Our narrator, Gramma Tala, will introduce her granddaughter, and we will learn how the ocean takes young Moana on an extraordinary journey to restore Te Fiti’s heart through a vibrant dance and songs in a mix of languages, including Tuvaluan, Tokelauan, and Samoan.
Transforming the Walt Disney Theatre in “How Far I’ll Go”
The Walt Disney Theatre will transform from the island of Motunui to the open ocean in this timeless scene, marking Moana’s departure from her home to the epic journey she has desired for her whole life. Twinkling stars will swirl overhead, and a giant, glowing manta ray will emerge and soar over the audience, inspiring Moana’s courage. The manta ray represents Gramma Tala’s spirit, guiding Moana on her voyage to save her people.
“Disney, The Tale of Moana” will join a stellar lineup of fan favourites such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure” at the Walt Disney Theatre onboard the Disney Treasure.
