Bonza, Australia’s first independent low-cost airline, has started a new route between the Gold Coast and Darwin, marking a significant step in Australian aviation. The inaugural flights have begun, ushering in a new age of economical and convenient air travel between these two famous destinations.
Bonza has put more than 5,000 seats on sale for all flights to and from the Gold Coast and Darwin over the next five days to celebrate the launch. These tickets are available for just $89 per person for one-way travel until the end of May 2024.
The new twice-weekly service, operating on Tuesdays/Wednesdays and Fridays/Saturdays, complements Bonza’s existing routes in and out of the Northern Territory. These include the Sunshine Coast-Darwin and Melbourne-Alice Springs routes, with regular fares starting from $149 one way per person.
Tim Jordan, CEO of Bonza, expressed his excitement about the new route. “We’re working hard to bring more choices for Gold Coast and Darwin customers,” he said. “With school holidays on the horizon, we’re looking forward to seeing our customers surfing on the Goldie or relaxing on a sunset cruise along the Timor Sea.”
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the new route. Rob Porter, Executive General Manager – Airports at the Airport Development Group, said, “We are very pleased to see that Territorians have already embraced Bonza and will now have more opportunity to travel to Queensland with Bonza’s flights between Darwin and the Gold Coast officially commencing.”
Amelia Evans, CEO of Queensland Airports Limited, also highlighted the potential of the new direct route. “The Gold Coast to Darwin route has long been an underserved market, so we are thrilled that Bonza has recognised its potential,” she said. “This direct service signifies a new era of convenient connectivity for travellers – eliminating the need for transit and more time to enjoy both regions.”
The new route is expected to provide considerable economic, tourism, and business opportunities between the regions, boosting NT tourism and increasing competition in the NT skies, which is a win for all travellers.
