Fiji Airways, the national airline of Fiji, is riding high on the jet stream of success after a record-breaking year in 2023. With over 2 million passengers on board—a remarkable 57% increase from the previous year—the airline is now setting its sights on further expanding its reach, particularly into its largest market, Australia.
The carrier’s ambitions were hinted at last year with talks of new flights to several additional Australian destinations and key cities in Asia and the Pacific. Now, the plans are taking shape, with CEO Andre Viljoen revealing potential new routes to underserved markets that align perfectly with Fiji Airways’ network, including Cairns and Newcastle in Australia and extending as far as Port Moresby and Pago Pago.
At the MTA National Conference in Nadi, Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill confirmed the airline’s exploration of a new direct route to Cairns, signalling a strategic move to strengthen its Australian network. But the airline’s vision doesn’t stop there. Viljoen expressed a desire to enhance its North American presence, with hopes pinned on an open skies agreement to unlock new opportunities in cities like Dallas/Ft. Worth and Seattle.
With a significant portion of its business stemming from Australia and New Zealand and a notable amount of traffic connecting onwards—particularly to North America—Viljoen sees immense potential in carrying connecting passengers through Fiji, especially from markets currently without direct service.
In line with its growth strategy, Fiji Airways is also looking ahead to fleet renewal, planning to retire its A330-200s and a leased A330-300 soon. The airline’s four new A350 aircraft fleets have been well-received, especially in long-haul sectors and routes where competitors operate smaller aircraft.
The airline’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience was further demonstrated by its recent elevation to full-member status within the oneworld alliance, just weeks after celebrating a record year. Additionally, Fiji Airways has introduced its Chef’s Table innovation, offering a unique Fijian fine-dining experience at the Premier Lounge in Nadi International Airport, further cementing its reputation as an innovator in the skies.
As Fiji Airways continues to soar to new heights, it remains dedicated to connecting the world to the beauty of Fiji while also bringing the essence of Fijian hospitality to every journey.
