Some of the best group tour travel companies for solo female travellers – recommended by real people!

If you’re new to solo travel, a group tour is an ideal way to get started. Having someone else handle all the logistics, planning, and organizing can be a huge relief! Plus, you have the added reassurance of having a guide with you every step of the way.

Even if you’ve been travelling for years, this is a real bonus. I swear travel planning gets more stressful every time I do it (there’s just WAY too much information and choice out there these days!).

But the best part about a group tour is that you’ll have a ready-made group of like-minded people to travel with. This is particularly true if you choose the right company to travel with. Most have different travel styles and target different audiences, so it’s important to pick the one that fits you best.

That’s where I come in! I’ve rounded up the best group tour companies for solo female travellers (all recommended by women who have actually travelled with them), and included the typical ages and travel styles of each company. So you can find the perfect group tour for your next adventure…

“I had been wanting to visit Jordan for a while but I was unsure about visiting the Middle East as a solo female traveller. In 2022, I decided to do the eight-day Highlights of Jordan tour with G Adventures, as the itinerary and price point appealed to me the most.

“The tour had 16 people and most were women from the US and UK. Ages varied but the youngest person was around mid-twenties. Our guide was in her late twenties so it felt like we were a group of friends.”

“I did their 2-week Morocco trip that covered all the highlights of the country, from exploring the medinas in Fes and Marrakech, to hiking in the Atlas mountains and glamping in the Sahara Desert. The trip was more expensive than other companies, but the hotels were comfortable and the guides were excellent.

“What made the trip great was travelling with like-minded solo travellers, almost all of whom were single professional women my age (and some of whom I’m still friends with).”

Recent customer Patti (@wrinkled_passport), told me: “By my second trip with Rock My Adventure, I wasn’t the least concerned about being a solo female in Rwanda and Uganda.

“I knew that by the end of the second day with my group – after eating a homecooked meal together in a neighbourhood courtyard, after relaxing together with an iced vanilla latte in the best coffee shop in Kigali, after watching a room full of women learn to intricately braid hair in a female cooperative – I knew Helen’s unique travel style would ensure we’d all be great friends.”

Another customer, Katja, said “I have been on 9 trips with Helen and I think my loyalty speaks for itself! Helen’s trips are well organized without losing their sense of spontaneity and adventure. She shows us Africa off the beaten track, offering a unique experience of local culture and breathtaking nature.”

I’m a member of my local Outdoor Adventure Girls group and I’m a huge fan. But as I’ve never done a tour myself, I spoke to a couple of recent travellers:

“For a first solo trip this ticked all the boxes! Very well-organised, knowledgeable tour guide, amazing experiences and unforgettable memories! I loved the camaraderie and adventurous ladies! Planning the next one already!” – Reim N, Iceland guest

“I’ve been on a few OAG trips, and they never disappoint. Meeting amazing women and conquering fears is the ultimate feel-good combination. Can’t recommend enough!” – Catriona, OAG Snowdon guest

6. Rabbie’s – best for UK sightseeing

Where: UK & Europe
Group Size: Maximum 16
Age Range: All ages (from 5+)
Group Range: These tours don’t target a specific demographic and usually have a wide range.
Travel Style: Sightseeing / Mid-Range*
*Accommodation is excluded from UK & Ireland tours, so you book whatever style you prefer.

Rabbie’s Tours originally began life as a Scotland tour company, and still focuses heavily on the UK and Ireland – although they now also run several tours in Europe.

On my Highlands tour with Rabbie’s a few years ago

I did a tour of the Scottish Highlands with Rabbie’s a few years ago and had a fantastic time. Tours are conducted on a comfy mini-coach which seats no more than 16 – and the guides really know their stuff, so you’ll learn a lot. The atmosphere was pretty chill: although we covered a lot of ground, I never felt rushed, and we had plenty of time to do our own thing.

The only downside is that, because accommodation is booked separately, we were all staying in different places – so it was harder to make friends as there was no time to chat over evening drinks or dinner. On longer tours with more time spent on the bus, this might not be so much of an issue.

7. Adventure Tours UK – best for sustainability

Where: UK
Group Size: 8-15 (some trips are capped at 8)
Age Range: All ages 18+ (usually 30s/40s)
Group Range: Around 50% are solo travellers – usually a 50:50 gender split.
Travel Style: Activities & adventure / Mid-Range

Adventure Tours UK are a fantastic, family-run company based in North Wales. They run small group, multi-activity tours in the UK with a focus on adventure: from the gentle (like mindful walking) to the hard-core (like trail running or hiking the 14 Peaks route).

Foraging on my Wild Wellness Retreat

I did their Wild Wellness Retreat in Wales a few years ago and I can’t recommend it enough! Glamping on a farm with a small group of like-minded individuals (all of us solo travellers) in search of a nature-centric reset: it was perfect!

The biggest selling point is the company’s incredible – and genuine – commitment to sustainability and responsible travel. For example: they only work with local, independent businesses. They’ve even measured (and declared) the carbon footprint of all their tours – and offset it as part of their aim towards Carbon Zero!

8. Exodus – best for immersive travel

Where: Worldwide
Group Size: 8-16
Age Range: 18+ (usually 35-65 depending on the tour)
Group Range: Over 50% of customers are solo, around 60% are women.
Travel Style: Range of tour styles including walking, adventure, culture, and wildlife.

Specialising in experience and activity-led small group tours, Exodus Adventure Travels have the highest Which? rating of all the tour operators on this list!

The trips range from classic sightseeing routes to walking and biking tours. If you’re keen to try a multi-day hike or cycling holiday, but don’t want to organise it yourself, these are ideal. Experiences and activities are a big part of the itineraries – expect homestays, winetasting, cookery classes, and more

I actually have my first trip booked with Exodus in a few months time, so I’ll update this post (and review the tour) once I’ve done that. So far, the booking experience and customer service have been great, so I have high hopes!

9. Contiki – best for younger travellers

Where: Worldwide
Group Size: ranges from under 15 to 30+ (capped at 53)
Age Range: 18-35
Group Range: Around 70% solo, almost 70% female.
Travel Style: Backpacking / Social / Party

Contiki tours are aimed at a slightly younger crowd – they’re known for their fast-paced itineraries, big group tours, and party vibes. They’re perfect for your first time backpacking: you’ll have all the fun of that style of travel, with none of the logistics or planning!

Depending on the tour and location, you’ll likely be sharing a room with up to four other travellers – a good way to make friends quickly on a tour. You’ll usually travel by coach – Contiki have a fleet of comfy, modern branded buses – and the journeys can be as much fun as the destinations themselves!

Tour itineraries are usually quite full-on and pack in as much as possible. They’re great if you want to see a lot in a short space of time, but less good if you like to take things slow and really immerse yourself in a destination. That said, it’s a solid way to start your backpacking trip without having to do any planning yourself!
